In 1876 Rokuemon Sugiura, No. 6, inherited his family business, a pharmacy which sold photographic supplies since 1873. That year, he opened a branch of his family business solely devoted to photographic supplies in Tokyo, Nihonbashi Honcho. In 1882 he started investing in manufacturing plants, and developed the company known now as Konica, which produced the country's first commercially produced camera, The Cherry Portable in 1903.
