About This Image

The study of movement or locomotion of the horse was the main focus of Marey's chrono-photographic studies, along with human locomotion and the flight of birds, right from the early 1870s onward. In July, 1887, Marey co-authored with Pagès an important article in the "Comptes Rendus de l’Académie des Science" on "Comparative Locomotion: pelvic limb movement in humans, elephants and horses"; and on September 2, 1893, he was the sole author of a second article in the journal "Nature", entitled "Locomotion compared in different animals, new applications of chronophotography"; and in 1898, "Analyse des mouvements du cheval par la chronophotographie".
