Yasufumi Nakamori
After eight years at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Associate Curator Yasufumi Nakamori has been named curator of photography and new media at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, starting May 31.
Yasufumi will continue in his present position until April. Since joining the MFAH staff in 2008, Yasufumi has curated numerous groundbreaking exhibitions including I Still Believe in Tomorrow: Contemporary Video from Asia (2008, with Christine Starkman), the Museum's first exhibition exclusively dedicated to video; Ruptures and Continuities: Photography Made after 1960 from the MFAH Collection (2010); Katsura: Picturing Modernism in Japanese Architecture, Photography of Ishimoto Yasuhiro (2010); Utopia/Dystopia: Construction and Destruction in Photography and Collage (2012); and most recently For a New World to Come: Experiments with Japanese Art and Photography, 1968–1978 (2015).
Katsura and For a New World to Come were listed by Artforum as among the best exhibitions of the year, and the catalogue for Katsura received the prestigious Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Award in 2011 from the College Art Association.
Among the more than 700 photographs that Yasufumi has brought to the Museum are a gift of 300 works by the New Bauhaus-trained photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto, establishing the second largest collection of this photographer's work outside of Japan; a collection of vernacular photographs from Peter J. Cohen; Danny Lyon's Destruction of Lower Manhattan; numerous Japanese works featured in For a New World to Come; and contemporary works by Matthew Buckingham, Thomas Demand, Trevor Paglen, and Martha Rosler.
As an internationally recognized scholar in the field of global post-1945 art and architecture, Yasufumi has taught at Rice University and in the graduate program of art history at Hunter College, CUNY, and has lectured widely and participated in symposia in Europe, America, and Asia.
