This image is from a collection of public relations photographs made for the U. S. Steel Company. Typed information affixed to verso includes photographer, location and caption that reads: A landmark on the banks of the Cuyahoga RIver in Cleveland, Central Furnaces of U. S. Steel's American Steel & Wire Company produces 50,000 tons of merchant pig iron a month for northern Ohio Foundries and other processors. Iron ore and limestone for this U. S. Steel subsidiary plant are moved by boat from upper ports of the Great Lakes directly to the furnace docks along the river, where the materials are unloaded by giant unloaders and placed in stockpiles. These stockpiles make it possible for the two furnaces to operate during the long months when winter weather shuts off the supply of ore by the water. Please contact the gallery for a quote on shipping and insurance costs.
